Foundation for child development
Location: New York City
Starting in 2015, Carlton was first engaged with the Foundation for Child Development (FCD) to resolve building related operational issues they were experiencing with their then-current offices in Midtown. When, in 2019, it was decided that FCD would relocate to The Interchurch Center on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, FCD again sought out Carlton for not only interior architectural design services, but to also manage the entire construction process for what was to be a very closely watched budget by their Board of Directors. As a not-for-profit only office building erected through the generosity of the Rockefeller Family, tenant turn-over was rare and many of the offices areas at the Interchurch Center dated back to the building’s original construction in 1960. Through Carlton’s development of a detailed construction budget early in the design process, and being fully vetted through peer reviews, the project was completed “on-budget”. The design’s responsiveness to the functional needs of the occupants proved to be a model solution for today’s social distancing concerns. Although modest in overall size, closed offices dominate the space, with full-glass office fronts, and indirectly lighting throughout, creating a light and airy environment. Typical offices measure just under 8’ wide, but with today’s paper-free environments, offices are not cluttered with extraneous file cabinets, resulting in a comfortable, private, efficient office that replaces cubicles of the past. Where workstations are needed, they all achieve proper distance requirements.
